What is a Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is one of the most common facial plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States. Drooping eyelids not only make a person look more tired and older than they feel, but they can also obstruct a personโs vision. The upper and lower eyelids can be addressed with a simple blepharoplasty procedure. During eyelid rejuvenation, excess fat and tissue is removed to create a younger, more awake appearance. The procedure is often combined with other facial rejuvenation techniques like the facelift, Botoxยฎ/Dysportยฎ, or dermal fillers for optimal improvements.
Benefits of a Blepharoplasty
With a blepharoplasty, years can be taken off of your appearance to address these common concerns when it comes to the eyes:
- Bags under the eyes
- Drooping upper eyelids that may or may not affect vision
- Puffy eyelids that hide the eyes
- Excess skin on the eyelids
Baggy or droopy eyelids can be addressed by reducing excess skin on the upper or lower eyelids. A more refreshed look is often the result when eye bags are improved with a blepharoplasty, as they can tend to make you look tired and worn.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Blepharoplasty?
When a lack of elasticity plus the constant pull from gravity have caused excessive skin to collect on the upper and lower eyelids, then you may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery. Your eyes are the windows to the soul, but if they are shaded by puffy eyelids you can tend to look older and more tired than you really are. When youโre tired of looking exhausted because of puffy eyelids, then you may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery. Blepharoplasty can make your eyes appear younger and more alert so you have clear, youthful-looking eyes that sparkle. Schedule your consultation now with Dr. Papel, Dr. Kontis, or Dr. Brown to find out if eyelid surgery is right for you.
How is a Blepharoplasty Performed?
At the office of Dr. Papel, Dr. Kontis, and Dr. Brown, patients can have eyelid surgery on the upper or lower eyelids. Upper eyelid surgery is performed by making an incision in the natural lines and creases that occur on your lids to minimize any visible scarring. The lower eyelid is often approached from the inside, known as a transconjunctival approach. In this way, fat bags can be contoured without making an external skin incision. This eliminates any visible scarring, as well as any downward pull on the eyelid.
Blepharoplasty procedures generally take between one to two hours. The procedure causes little discomfort and requires minimal recovery time. Dr. Papel, Dr. Kontis, and Dr. Brown are experienced with giving patients youthful results from eyelid surgery.
Recovery After a Blepharoplasty
Recovery after blepharoplasty is typically short, with the worst of side effects being present the day after surgery. These include some swelling, bruising, and general discomfort that will continue to diminish during the first week of recovery. The use of a cool compress and pain medication can help ease any discomfort. Activities that could strain the eyes including looking at a computer screen and watching tv should be avoided. After a week, most patients can return to their regular routines. Swelling will continue to diminish over the next several weeks, and patients can then enjoy a more awake and rejuvenated appearance that is long lasting.
Patients find that sagging eyelid skin and fat ages their faces significantly and have been turning to Dr. Papel, Dr. Kontis, and Dr. Brown to treat this effect and bring out the beauty their eyes once possessed.
