What is Sculptra®?

Sculptra® is an injectable collagen stimulator designed to restore facial volume, sagging, aging skin, and improve wrinkles, including nasolabial folds and other deep folds. Unlike traditional dermal fillers, Sculptra does not primarily provide immediate volume to the treatment area. Instead, its poly-L-lactic acid, sometimes searched as l lactic acid PLLA, supports gradual collagen production within the dermis. This process can create subtle fullness, improve skin texture and elasticity, and support a more youthful appearance.

While HA fillers and some other fillers may provide immediate results by adding volume beneath the skin’s surface, Sculptra offers a gradual transformation as new collagen develops. Sculptra addresses age-related volume loss by supporting the skin’s underlying tissue, with improvements typically appearing over a few months. Results vary depending on individual factors, including age, treatment goals, and the number of treatment sessions performed.

Benefits of Sculptra Injections

A skilled provider uses a specialized injection technique to place Sculptra in the targeted areas and develop a tailored treatment plan. Many patients need two to three sessions for optimal results, although individual needs differ. What patients experience after treatment may include swelling, tenderness, bruising, or redness in the treated areas; these reactions are usually temporary, and most people can resume normal activities shortly afterward. Compared with traditional fillers, Sculptra may produce subtle, natural looking results that can last up to two years, though follow-up care may be needed to maintain the effect.

Who is a Good Candidate for Sculptra?

Candidates for Sculptra® are those who wish to add volume to their face with the production of their own natural collagen. This means results will not be instant but will continue over time and be long-lasting. Sculptra® offers an alternative to hyaluronic acid fillers and can provide youthful-looking skin that lasts. Not only can wrinkles be filled in by collagen, but the facial features can be subtly defined as well.

How is Sculptra Injected?

We no longer apply topical numbing medication before the injections, instead we have patients purchase 5% lidocaine over-the-counter and apply every 15 minutes to the injection sites one hour before their appointment. Dr. Papel, Dr. Kontis, Dr. Quan, or Dr. Gengler will then meticulously and precisely inject Sculptra® just underneath your skin. Depending on your specific needs and priorities, you might need more than one treatment to achieve your desired results. The injection process can take about 10-20 minutes to complete.

Sculptra Results 

You should anticipate needing to recover from Sculptra treatment for about half a day following your procedure. This usually means that you need to take time off from school, work or running errands while you wait for any potential bruising and swelling to dissipate. You will be instructed to massage the areas where Sculptra® has been injected for five minutes, five times a day for five days.

The results of Sculptra® will take time to fully develop as the skin produces more collagen. This can take several months. Most patients see the full results of their treatment after about two to three sessions over the course of two to three months. After this time, patients can expect smoothed out wrinkles and folds and lifted cheeks, depending on where the formula was placed. These results will continue with time, lasting for about two years before a touch-up session is needed.
