What is Dysport®?
Dysport® is a neuromodulator injectable that is used to smooth out facial lines and wrinkles in the upper face. Like other neuromodulators and botulinum toxin injections, Dysport® works by temporarily preventing certain facial muscles from contracting, resulting in fewer lines and wrinkles. Only wrinkle-causing muscles are affected during treatment, so your natural facial expressions are preserved. Dysport® is temporary but can be easily maintained with touch-up sessions.

Dysport® similarly to Botox injections is used to temporarily improve facial fine lines and wrinkles, without altering the expression of your entire face. You will still be able to freely reveal facial expressions, such as smiling, in regions that are untreated. Who is a Good Candidate for Dysport®?

Dysport® can effectively treat dynamic wrinkles or those caused by facial expressions. The treatment is a great alternative for those who are not ready for a surgical procedure or do not require one yet. Dysport may also treat muscle spasms, unwanted muscle contractions, hyperhidrosis, and urinary incontinence. Further consultation with Dr. Papel, Dr. Kontis, Dr. Quan, and Dr. Gengler will help you decide upon the optimal method of treatment. Individuals with an active skin infection, upper respiratory infection, or who have experienced an allergic reaction to botulinum toxin should not receive treatments. Dr. Isabelle Gengler, who trained under Drs. Papel and Kontis as a Johns Hopkins facial plastic surgery fellow, favors subtle, natural-looking enhancement inspired by European techniques. She holds the unique qualification of being trained, accredited, and experienced in both the U.S. and France, and was the first French otolaryngologist to obtain European Board Certification.
How is Dysport® Administered?
Before the injections are administered, the treatment area is disinfected using alcohol swabs. The doctor will then use a very tiny needle to inject Dysport® into the injection site on your face that you would like treated. The entire injection process only takes about 15 minutes.
Results of Dysport®
There is little to no recovery period from your Dysport® treatment. You will want to avoid strenuous activity for about a day after your treatment, however. Dr. Papel, Dr. Kontis, Dr. Quan, and Dr. Gengler will be able to give you more specific instructions depending on your individual procedure. Dysport® begins working in just a few days, with full results of a reduction of facial wrinkles in about a week. You can expect fewer fine lines and wrinkles with a more youthful appearance. These results can last for about 3-6 months before a touch-up is needed.
Potential Side Effects
The most important information to know before taking Dysport is that, like other botulinum toxin products, it may produce distant toxin effects that affect areas beyond the planned injection site, potentially causing symptoms such as muscle weakness, generalized weakness, fatigue, double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, dry mouth, sore throat, voice changes, swallowing problems, loss of bladder control, trouble breathing, or other breathing problems; these effects may appear hours to weeks after treatment, can be life threatening, and require immediate medical help. Dysport does not cause the infectious condition called botulism, but its effects can resemble botulinum-toxin illness. Seek urgent care if severe symptoms occur, as respiratory or swallowing complications may become a serious condition that could require hospitalization, assisted ventilation, or emergency surgery in rare circumstances.
People with asthma, abnormal heart rate, pre-existing swallowing or respiratory difficulties, muscle stiffness, myasthenia gravis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, or another nerve or muscle disorder may face a greater risk of serious side effects and should discuss all your medical conditions with your care team. Do not receive Dysport if you are allergic to cow’s milk protein, any ingredient in Dysport, or a related toxin product, or if an infection is present where treatment is planned. Tell your clinician about all the medicines you use, including any new medicine, antibiotics you have recently received by injection, muscle relaxants, cold medicine, sleep medicine, and certain other medicines that may intensify its effects; also report any toxin treatment received within the last four months. The dose of Dysport is not interchangeable with that of another toxin product. Although Dysport may provide temporary improvement in treated conditions, possible side effects vary by indication; the most common side effects for cosmetic frown-line treatment include headache, nose or throat irritation, eyelid swelling or drooping, nausea, injection site pain, skin reactions, and upper respiratory tract infection. Contact your clinician about persistent discomfort or other change, and do not drive, operate machinery, or perform other dangerous activities if treatment affects your strength, eyesight, alertness, or coordination.
