What is a Chin Implant?

A chin implant involves a surgery where implants made from soft silicone material are inserted over the bone of the chin to push overlying fat, muscle, and skin outwards. It helps restore symmetry to the face and help patients achieve a more defined chin and jawline.

Benefits of a Chin Implant

Patients choose the chin implant when they are unhappy with one of the following concerns:

  •         A chin that is too small
  •         A recessed chin
  •         The appearance of a double chin
  •         A chin that is not proportionate to the rest of the facial features

A chin implant offers a long-term solution to these concerns, allowing patients to transform their profile and facial balance. Patients also report feeling more confident with their well-defined chin and profile appearance.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Chin Implant?

Dr. Papel, Dr. Kontis, and Dr. Brown commonly recommend chin implants to patients who are dealing with low self-esteem due to a small chin that creates an undefined profile, as well as an unbalanced face. Dr. Papel, Dr. Kontis, and Dr. Brown will provide you with thorough preoperative instructions, in addition to taking a detailed medical history and performing a physical exam to determine your fitness for surgery. Prior to surgery, they will also answer any questions you may have. You will need to stop smoking at least four weeks prior to and after undergoing surgery in order to promote better healing. You should avoid taking aspirin, as well as certain anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal medications that can cause increased bleeding. Hydration is very important before and after surgery for safe recovery.

How is a Chin Implant Performed?

During a chin augmentation procedure with Dr. Papel, Dr. Kontis, or Dr. Brown, your implant is positioned over the chin bone and below the lips. This is done with the use of general or local anesthesia to ensure that the patient is comfortable. A small incision will be made either underneath the chin or completely concealed inside the mouth. Through this incision, a pocket is created, which will hold the implant in place. The incision is then closed and sutured. Through their surgical mastery of chin augmentation, Dr. Papel, Dr. Kontis, and Dr. Brown create subtle but noticeable results that will improve your self-esteem and body image. The entire procedure takes one to two hours, and there is very little recovery time needed.

Recovery After a Chin Implant

Your recovery from chin augmentation with Dr. Papel, Dr. Kontis, and Dr. Brown will typically range from one to two weeks. It is also normal to have some initially decreased sensation along the chin, although this typically improves over the ensuing months. There can be some initial swelling and bruising immediately following your surgery. Following surgery, you should gently apply ice to your chin for 48 hours and also to be sure to sleep with your head elevated. Your stitches will be taken out within a week or less after surgery. Many patients return to work and social activities one week after their surgery, at which time exercise may also slowly be resumed.
