Thigh Lift

in Baltimore, MD

Our highly trained plastic surgery providers offer several thigh lift options to patients in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Annapolis, and the surrounding areas of Maryland. The thigh region is prone to developing excess skin and fat, particularly with age or after significant weight loss. Depending on your concerns, treatment from our board certified plastic surgeons may include an inner thigh lift, medial thigh lift, outer thigh lift, bilateral thigh lift, or spiral thigh lift. This form of body contouring removes loose tissue, and a thigh lift tightens the remaining skin to create firmer, smoother thighs. During recovery, patients may need to wear compression garments to control swelling and prevent the accumulation of excess fluid.

What is a Thigh Lift?

Many people are plagued with loose, sagging skin or cellulite on the thighs. Others have thighs that are disproportionate to the rest of their body or rub together and cause chafing whenever they walk. A thigh lift is a surgical procedure that addresses all these problems by removing excess skin to give the thighs a more toned appearance. The thigh lift can be performed alone or can be done as part of a larger body recontouring procedure.

Benefits of a Thigh Lift

A thigh lift can:

  •         Produce more shapely thighs that are free from wrinkles, sagging skin, or cellulite
  •         Reduce thighs that are too large in comparison to the lower leg
  •         Enhance the shape of the thighs
  •         Help provide a thigh gap so that legs do not rub together when wearing skirts

Who is a Good Candidate for a Thigh Lift?

A thigh lift is not a substitute for weight loss. That being said, it can help those who are generally fit, yet have thighs that are disproportionate to the rest of their body. Those who have experienced significant weight loss might also desire a thigh lift to help them reduce the sagging skin that remains. A thigh lift is ideal for reducing excess skin, loose skin, and tissue and can also remove stubborn fat with liposuction.

How is a Thigh Lift Performed?

For a thigh lift procedure, your surgeon will make an incision in the groin area or along the inside of the thigh. If excess fat must also be extracted, liposuction may be the next step. This involves using a thin tube to suction away fat and allow for sleeker contours. If liposuction is not needed, excess tissue will simply be trimmed away. The outer skin will be pulled tightly over your new, smaller thighs and held together with stitches. Additional shaping could be required to help you achieve a more pleasing form, achieve smoother skin, or to produce a thigh gap.

Recovery After a Thigh Lift

After a thigh lift procedure, patients are advised to take at least 2-3 weeks off work to recover. During this time, leg swelling and discomfort can be expected but is manageable with pain medication and ice packs. Patient’s should wear a compression garment for the first 4 weeks after surgery, in order to help minimize swelling. It can take several weeks to return to regular activities and exercise. Your surgeon will tell you when it is OK to start introducing exercises again.
