What To Expect During Your Eyelid Lift

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelift eyelid surgery, is cosmetic surgery of the eye. It involves the altering of muscles, skin, and fat around your eye that have changed with aging. The procedure is for people seeking anti-aging treatments. Sagging of the eyelid is a normal and natural part of aging, but you can have eyelid lift surgery to correct these unwelcome changes.

People seek eyelid lift surgery if they have big bags under their eyes, excess skin on their upper and lower eyelids, excess fat, drooping eyelids, dark circles or heavy upper eyelids. It’s not always about cosmetic concerns; some have the procedure because their vision is affected by the sagging skin of the upper eyelid. Upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery can be performed together or separately depending on your concerns.

Eyelid Lift Preparation

The first step is setting up an initial consultation with your plastic surgeon to discuss your eyelid concerns and expected outcome. You will also want to ask important questions on what to expect of the surgery, the surgeon’s credentials, training, and experience. It may also be helpful to review patients’ testimonials as well as before and after eyelid lift photos.

Before the procedure, the surgeon may run some tests, a physical examination of your eyes, or recommend a visual field test. Your surgeon will also take a picture of your eyes to help him/her during the procedure.

Remember to tell your surgeon about any medical condition and medications you are taking to reduce the chances of complications. The surgeon is likely to ask you to stop taking any medications that increase your chances of bleeding, like ibuprofen or aspirin.

Eyelid Lift Procedure

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, which means you can go back home after the procedure. Anesthesia can be used under local for the upper eyelids, or general anesthesia is also used, especially when the lower lids are done. During the procedure, the surgeon will make small cuts and remove excess muscle, skin, and even fat, and may move the tissue to other areas around your eye before closing the incision. The upper lid incision is in the upper lid crease.

On the lower eyelids, excessive protruding fat may be removed and skin tightened to reduce sagging. The incision can be done outside below the lower eyelashes or inside the eyelids. Extra fat may be added to correct cheek hollowness which also affects how the lower lid looks.

Eyelid Lift Recovery

Recovery time after eyelid lift surgery is short compared to other cosmetic surgeries.

It is essential to take some time off after eyelid surgery as you may experience some mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising. It can take about a week before the symptoms go away, and the surgeon may recommend you take Tylenol (acetaminophen)  and use ice packs for a few days to reduce swelling and bruising.
